1981 WISE Alumni Bulletin Board

1981 WISE faculty advisor Dr. Paul Craig reports: I’m now Emeritus from UCDavis. My current work is entirely policy. I was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board. The NWTRB was established by Congress to give advice to Congress and the Secretary of Energy regarding the storage of high level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, NV. The Board consists of 11 scientists. We’re charged with assessing the scientific merit of Department of Energy work to characterize Yucca Mountain. Under the present schedule the Secretary of DoE in 2002 is to make a recommendation to the President as to the licencability of the site. This is absolutely fascinating science policy. It involves figuring out how to apply scientific principles to extrapolate performance some 10,000 years into the future! (8/31/98)

John Crevier is president of his own electrical engineering/consulting firm, J. D. Crevier & Associates, in Granada Hills, California. He reports: I have started the 9th year as the owner of my consulting engineering firm. My project work has taken me to Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Nebraska, Florida, France and Japan. I have been married for almost 21 years to my wife Laurie whom I met while a WISE intern. We have three wonderful children ages 17, 15 and 10. The oldest will be attending University of Colorado, Boulder in August 2003. I am still surprised how few engineering students at my alma mater (Loyola Marymount, Los Angeles) have ever heard of the Wise program. I hope to see Rich, Tony, Tim, Steve and Dave someday in the future. I have always told people that my summer in D.C. in 1981 was the most exciting 10 weeks of my life. (6/03)

Steve Leonhardt: I am a water attorney in the Denver area, with Burns, Figa & Will, P.C. Cheryl and I have been married since 1988. Our son, David, was born in 1993. (04/04)

Rich Myhre is a partner, Vice President, and Director of Bevilacqua-Knight, Inc., the management consulting company, and continues to be active in ASME. UPDATE: I’ve been involved in public policy more than ever the last couple years, especially with respect to climate change, advanced coal power technologies, and carbon sequestration. Still at the consulting firm BKi, I’ve written Congressional testimony for a client (Electric Power Research Institute) five times already this year. I’m currently writing a report for another client (Caifornia Energy Commission) on carbon sequestration, which is destined for the California Legislature. A power plant energy policy idea (to reduce CO2 emissions) that I suggested to the Energy Commission in 2005 is now a California state law. Another major project involves providing public outreach and project management support for one of the DOE Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships (WESTCARB). (9/07)
